Ledger.com/Start® | Getting started with Ledger Wallet
Welcome to the world of self-custody and ultimate security for your digital assets. Getting started with your Ledger hardware wallet is the most important step you can take to protect your cryptocurrencies and NFTs from online threats. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the unboxing, setup, and first use of your new Ledger device.
Why Start with a Ledger Wallet?
Before we dive into the setup, it’s crucial to understand why you’ve made the right choice. Unlike software wallets or exchange accounts, a Ledger hardware wallet keeps your private keys—the critical data that controls your assets—offline in a secure chip. This means your crypto is safe from hackers, malware, and phishing attacks, even if your computer is compromised. It’s your personal vault for the digital age.
Step 1: Unboxing and Initial Checklist
Your Ledger box contains everything you need:
- The Ledger device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Stax)
- A USB cable
- A recovery sheet for writing down your 24-word recovery phrase.
- Keychain strap (for some models).
Immediately verify that the packaging seal is intact. This is your first security check to ensure your device hasn’t been tampered with. If the seal is broken, contact Ledger Support before proceeding.
Step 2: Download Ledger Live – Your Command Center
Ledger Live is the official companion application for your Ledger device. It allows you to manage your portfolio, buy/sell/swap crypto, and install apps on your device.
- Go to Ledger.com and navigate to the "Download" section.
- Only download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Never trust links from third-party sites or app stores (unless confirmed official for mobile).
- Install the application on your desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) or mobile device (iOS, Android).
Step 3: Initialize and Set Up Your Device
- Connect Your Device: Plug your Ledger wallet into your computer using the provided USB cable. For the Nano X, you can also use Bluetooth with the mobile app.
- Follow On-Screen Prompts: The device will display "Welcome." Use the buttons to navigate.
- Choose a PIN Code: This is your first line of physical defense. Select a PIN code (4 to 8 digits) that is strong and unique. Never share this PIN with anyone. Confirm your PIN.
Step 4: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase – The Most Critical Step
This is the single most important action in securing your crypto.
- Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase). This phrase is a master key to all your accounts on that device.
- Write each word in order on your provided recovery sheet. Use a pen. Do not type it, screenshot it, or store it digitally.
- Verify the phrase as prompted by the device to ensure you recorded it correctly.
- Guard This Phrase With Your Life: Store it in a safe, offline, and fireproof location. Never share these 24 words with anyone. Ledger will NEVER ask for them.
Security Rule #1: Your recovery phrase IS your crypto. Whoever has it, owns your assets. The Ledger device is just a secure way to use it.
Step 5: Install Apps and Add Accounts in Ledger Live
Your Ledger device needs small applications to manage different cryptocurrencies.
- In Ledger Live, go to the "My Ledger" section.
- Connect and unlock your device. Allow "Ledger Manager" on the device screen.
- Browse the app catalog and install apps for the cryptocurrencies you own (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Polygon).
- Then, go to the "Accounts" tab and "Add Account" for each currency. Ledger Live will derive your public addresses. Your assets are now visible and manageable.
Step 6: Receive and Send Crypto
To Receive Funds:
- In Ledger Live, select the correct account and click "Receive."
- Connect your device, unlock it, and open the corresponding app (e.g., Bitcoin app).
- Verify the receiving address both on your computer screen AND on your Ledger's secure screen. This confirms the address hasn't been altered by malware.
- Use this verified address to receive funds from an exchange or another wallet.
To Send Funds:
- Click "Send," enter the recipient address and amount.
- Connect your device, review all transaction details on its secure screen.
- Physically press the buttons to confirm and sign the transaction. This is the security in action—the private key never leaves the device.
Best Practices for Ongoing Security
- Firmware Updates: Always keep your Ledger device firmware and Ledger Live updated via official notifications in the app. These updates contain critical security improvements.
- Verify, Then Trust: Always double-check addresses and transaction details on your device's screen.
- Beware of Phishing: Ledger will never contact you via email, DM, or phone asking for your recovery phrase, PIN, or to send crypto.
- Use the Ledger Knowledge Base: For any questions, visit support.ledger.com—the official and safest source of information.
